If you are employed by, manage or own a business, hotel, multi-family complex, restaurant or bar in Alachua County, you qualify to receive complimentary recycling assistance. This program provides:
On February 25, 2020, the Alachua County Commission passed Ord. 2020-04, which bans single-use plastic straws and stirrers from being distributed by beverage providers (even free beverage providers). Medical facilities, nursing homes, etc., are exempt from this ordinance. Fines can amount to $250 per violation notice.
The ban includes straws made from “biologically based polymers” that may be advertised as compostable or made from plants. Single-use alternatives include paper, bamboo, wheat, etc. Please call Alachua County Solid Waste & Resource Recovery at (352) 338-3233 with any questions.
We’ll send a Waste Alternatives Specialist to your business to collect information and analyze your company’s waste stream free of charge. Then, we’ll produce a report and outline the best ways for you to establish a recycling program or enhance an existing one.
