On February 25, 2020, the Alachua County Commission passed Ord. 2020-04, which bans single-use plastic straws and stirrers from being distributed by beverage providers (even free beverage providers). Medical facilities, nursing homes, etc., are exempt from this ordinance. Fines can amount to $250 per violation notice.

The ban includes straws made from “biologically based polymers” that may be advertised as compostable or made from plants. Single-use alternatives include paper, bamboo, wheat, etc. Please call Alachua County Solid Waste & Resource Recovery at (352) 338-3233 with any questions.
