Curbside Trash Pickup: Holidays and Special Items
Normal Curbside Pickup Schedule in Alachua County
Waste pickup in Alachua County and the City of Gainesville is currently serviced Monday–Thursday. If you don’t know when your recycling, trash or bulk items are picked up – please call the Office of Waste Collection at (352) 338-3233 and provide your address to determine your pickup day.
Holidays that will affect trash pickup in Alachua County
Collection services will only be affected by these six holidays:
- New Year’s Day
- Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday
- Memorial Day
- July 4th
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Collection for these holidays and the remainder of the week will be delayed by one day if the observed holiday
occurs on a weekday. Collection will return to the normal schedule the following week. Collection will not be delayed if the holiday falls on the weekend.
For example, on a week with a Monday scheduled holiday, Tuesday’s collections will occur on Wednesday, Wednesday’s collections on Thursday, and Thursday’s collections on Friday.

Does Alachua County pick up Bulk Items?
Yes! Bulk waste items, such as furniture and large household items, are collected curbside weekly from residential homes in Alachua County and the City of Gainesville’s service areas. No appointment is needed or required for the removal of bulk waste items and there is no additional cost for these collection services.
Alachua County and the City of Gainesville offer free curbside pickup of bulk items to residents with curbside service. Bulk items include furniture such as couches, tables, chairs, desks, and mattresses.
Limited amounts of interior remodeling debris will also be collected.
For pickup of appliances such as stoves, washers, and dryers, call the Alachua County Waste Collection at (352)338-3233, City of Gainesville (352)334-2330 or call the City in which you live to schedule.
Special collections of exterior modeling debris, such as asphalt or fencing, may be arranged for a fee. If you’re looking to repurpose or donate materials, you can find more information through using the Zero Waste Wizard.
IMPORTANT: On your collection day, the bulk item(s) must be kept separate from any other trash or debris. Items that will fit in a garbage cart or yellow overflow trash bag are not considered “bulk”.
Bulk Items that are too large to fit in your garbage cart or an Official Yellow Bag must be placed 4 ft. from your garbage cart and recycle bins. These items can include bicycles, plastic play sets, tables, chairs, sofas, desks, mattresses, etc.
When do I need to call to schedule a special pickup?
Appliances
Residents who would like appliances such as stoves, washers, dryers, refrigerators and freezers picked up must call the Office of Waste Collection at 352-338-3233 to schedule a free pickup. Refrigerators and freezers must be empty. Remove doors, or securely close doors with tape or zip ties to prevent accidental lock-ins.
Interior Home Repair Material
Interior Home Repair Material (2 cubic yards max) such as cabinets, ceiling fans, inside doors, molding trim, sinks and toilets are eligible for curbside pickup. Carpet must be cut and rolled in 5 ft. sections weighing less than 40 lbs. each.
Only residential homes serviced through Alachua County or the City of Gainesville’s Residential Curbside Service Program are eligible for this service. Debris generated from work performed by contractors (i.e., building contractors, installers, or renovators) must be hauled off by the contractor.
